Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project Limited Edition Shoe

This holiday season, TOMS Shoes has partnered with the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project to create a limited edition shoe for men and women. The exclusive collaboration benefits CTAOP and commemorates 10,000 pairs to be given to children living in remote communities in South Africa as part of TOMS Shoes and CTAOP’s continuing efforts in the country.

Academy Award-winning actor Charlize Theron and TOMS Shoes co-designed the shoe, which was inspired by the baobab tree, a source of many legends and superstitions in Theron’s native South Africa. Made from vegan materials, the shoe is embroidered with the native baobab tree over-dyed canvas in blue and orange. The eco-friendly shoe is lined with the Africa Outreach Project logo.

“I’m thrilled to have TOMS Shoes as a partner. We are so grateful for their generous donation of shoes to the students that we work with,” said Theron. “They are passionate about the kids and have been incredibly supportive of the work of the Africa Outreach Project. It’s exciting that we’re able to come together in such a cool and creative way to bring attention to the needs of many South African youth.”

In December, Theron traveled to South Africa to begin distribution of the shoes to children in need in the Umkhanyakude District of the KwaZulu-Natal Province. CTAOP spotlights the urgent need to provide sustainable health, education and recreational resources to remote areas where HIV/AIDS rates are unacceptably high.

CTAOP provided a lead gift to help create mobile health units to improve the health, education, and social development of more than 10,000 youth across 12 high schools in the area. Annually, every student receives a minimum of one hour-long session with an HIV counselor in which they are evaluated for health and social problems, offered HIV testing, given the opportunity to participate in computer-training sessions and presented with guidance for leading a healthier life. In 2010, CTAOP aims to expand on this program by building soccer fields and creating a youth league for the schools.

The limited edition Baobab Sunset and Baobab Night are available for $54 and sold exclusively on www.TOMSShoes.com. A portion of the proceeds from each pair will go directly to the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project.

Enter "BAOBAB" at checkout in the promo code box and, in addition, TOMS will donate a percentage of any non-Baobab purchase to CTAOP.

About TOMS Shoes:
In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in a village in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One. To date, TOMS has given over 150,000 pairs of shoes to children around the world. TOMS’ goal is to give 300,000 pairs of new shoes to children in need in 2009 – but with recent successes, TOMS is hopeful of giving even more.

About the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project:
Academy Award-winning actress Charlize Theron, in partnership with the Entertainment Industry Foundation, established the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project. Today, more than 10,000 students from 12 high schools are served.
